Avila University Fountain

Avila 001

Location:  Avila University, 11901 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO

Found:  May 15, 2016

This fountain is located on the campus of Avila University in the Jeanne Hamilton Olofson Plaza.  It flanks both sides of the steps leading up to Blasco Hall.  It is at the “front” of the campus and is easily seen from the parking lot there at the corner of Wornall and 118th Street.  The plaza is very open and “roomy” and I imagine that a number of university events occur here.

The two fountains are identical.  They both have four levels with three bubblers in each of the top three levels.  Water starts at the top level at the top of the stairs and flows down to the next level and so on until it reaches the final basin at the lowest level.  Each bubbler has a light next to it and there is a light in the bottom level.  The lights were on when I was out there and I saw most were tinted red and I also saw green and blue.  I imagine it looks pretty good at night.

Waldo Fountain

Waldo 005

Location:  Waldo, West 75th Street and Wornall Road, Kansas City, Missouri

Found:  July 4, 2014

In the historic Waldo neighborhood in Kansas City, this fountain sits at the intersection of West 75th and Wornall Road.  This little park area is a gathering point along a walking/biking trail.  The Waldo monument was installed in 1997.  Money was raised for the construction and maintenance of the fountain and it was constructed in 2007.  The plaque on site tells of the history of the site.

The fountain consists of the front part which runs constantly.  Along the back, near the low wall, are fountains that shoot water straight up in the air to varying heights on a cycle.

Wornall Fountain

Wornall 003

Location:  West 67th Street and Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO

Found:  September 2, 2013

This fountain is located on a small island at the intersection of West 67th and Wornall.  The island is well-landscaped but the tall bushes at the back make the fountain hard to see from the west on West 67th.  The church on the northwest quadrant of the intersection makes for a nice backdrop.

Romanelli Island is an island formed by West 69th Street, Edgevale Road and Wornall Road.  The sculpture consists of three cherubs around a goose with the water coming out of the goose’s bill and falling into the basin below.  Water then flows out of the basin through the ram’s heads at either end.  The island is at the entrance of the Armour Fields section of Kansas City.  To the east you can make out the Armour Center Fountain.

Found:  July 20, 2013 (original), May 12, 2016 (update)

Sculpture of Diana surrounded by cherubs sits in a pool in front of a waterfall.  According to the plaque this is one of only two castings of this sculpture and the only one in bronze.  It is a very detailed sculpture.  It even features Diana’s bow laying beside her.

The waterfall measures 17 feet tall and 56 feet across.  Fountain is in front of the Intercontinental Hotel at the corner of Ward Parkway and Wornall Road across Brush Creek from the Plaza.

This post has been updated with new pictures.  The pictures that had been on this post had been taken in the morning which put the sculpture and waterfall in shadow.  These new pictures were taken in the afternoon and everything shows up much better.
