Sixty-Ninth Street Fountain

Sixty-ninth Street On 001

Location:  Ward Parkway, between W 68th Terrace and W 69th Street, Kansas City, MO

Found:  May 12, 2016

This fountain was established by the JC Nichols Company in 1930.  It sits in the median of Ward Parkway between 68th Terrace and 69th Street.  Arno Park is across the street to the southwest.  Water bubbles up out of the top of the fountain and eventually falls into the pool below.  The pool is lined with shrubs and flowers.

This is an update post from an old post.  This was the first time I had ever seen this fountain in operation.  The old post had pictures of it not running and I was under the impression that the fountain did not run at all anymore.  Evidently my impression was wrong or it had gotten fixed.  Anyway, pictures of a fountain running as opposed to not running always calls for a new post.

Ward Parkway Center Fountain

Ward Parkway 005

Location:  Ward Parkway Center, 8600 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, MO

Found:  May 12, 2016

This fountain is located at the east entrance to the Ward Parkway Center underneath the skylight dome.  Lots of granite tile but it blends in well with the colour and design scheme of the area under the dome.

Water flows out the top and falls down to the pedestal and then off the pedestal into the basin below.  For an indoor fountain they apparently have trouble with wet floors as there were yellow warning cones next to the fountain, as you can see in the pictures.  Of course, one of the exterior doors was propped open and the wind was blowing in while I was there.  Cause and effect maybe?

Brush Creek Waterfalls

Brush Creek Waterfall 001

Location:  Brush Creek at Country Club Plaza, Kansas City, MO

Found:  May 12, 2016

One of several waterfalls on Brush Creek through Country Club Plaza and points east.  The particular waterfall in the pictures is the one located near Jefferson Street at the west end of the Plaza.  Walking paths on both sides of the creek lead up to and near this waterfall.  Access to other falls along the channel may vary.

Westwood (MO) Fountain

Westwood MO 001

Location:  West 50th Street and Westwood Road, Kansas City, MO

Date Found:  July 4, 2014

In the Westwood area of Kansas City, Missouri, west of Country Club Plaza, and just off Ward Parkway is this fountain sitting in a triangular traffic island at the intersection of West 50th Street and Westwood Road.  The sign says Westwood Park, but the actual Westwood Park is about 3 blocks northwest of here.  Not to be confused with fountains in the cities of Westwood or Westwood Hills in Kansas, which are also in the Kansas City Metro area.

I took these pictures on July 4th and you can see that the fountain area was decorated appropriately.

Location:  211 Nichols Road, Country Club Plaza, Kansas City, MO

Found:  July 20, 2013

On the exterior of what was the Halls Building and is now a parking garage in Country Club Plaza are three fountains known as the Court of Lions fountains.  Each fountain consists of water flowing out of a leonine face and into a basin or basins below.

Fountain #1, pictured above, is on the West face of the building facing Central Street.  It faces and is easily accessible from the sidewalk.

Fountain #2, below, is on the Southwest corner and faces Ward Parkway.

Fountain #3, below, is on the Southeast corner and also faces Ward Parkway.

Fountains #2 and #3 are a little tough to see as there are trees, flowers and vegetation surrounding both and neither have a dedicated path leading to them.

Meyer Circle Sea Horse Fountain

Meyer Circle 001

Location:  Ward Parkway and West Meyer Boulevard, Kansas City, MO

Found:  July 5, 2013

Lots of detail.  Lots of water.  Fountain is named after the three mythological sea horses that are found in the statue in the middle of the fountain.  Careful getting to this fountain.  This is a busy traffic circle and there are cars moving around it constantly and you have park on one of the side streets.  The Ward Parkway Mirror Pool Fountain is about 2-3 blocks north of here.

Found:  July 20, 2013 (original), May 12, 2016 (update)

Sculpture of Diana surrounded by cherubs sits in a pool in front of a waterfall.  According to the plaque this is one of only two castings of this sculpture and the only one in bronze.  It is a very detailed sculpture.  It even features Diana’s bow laying beside her.

The waterfall measures 17 feet tall and 56 feet across.  Fountain is in front of the Intercontinental Hotel at the corner of Ward Parkway and Wornall Road across Brush Creek from the Plaza.

This post has been updated with new pictures.  The pictures that had been on this post had been taken in the morning which put the sculpture and waterfall in shadow.  These new pictures were taken in the afternoon and everything shows up much better.
