The U.N. Peace Plaza was built to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the United Nations and formally dedicated by then-U.N. General Secretary Kofi Annan in 2003. It’s creators describe it as the only memorial in the world to those serving in the peacekeeping forces of the United Nations.
The plaza consists of partially-walled concrete enclosure with the fountain as its centerpiece. The memorial plaques are on a pedestal on the east side with the flagpoles. The fountain is topped by a sculpture by Tom Corbin called “Girl with Dove.” The water comes up through the middle of the fountain at the base of the sculpture. The water then streams down a multi-coloured tiled dome and then down into the basin.
It is located at the intersection of West Walnut and West Lexington in Independence. Across the street to the south is the Community of Christ Auditorium and across the street to the east is the unique architecture of the Community of Christ Temple with its tall spiral spire.
