Chief Charles Bluejacket Memorial Fountain

Bluejacket 001

Location:  Herman Laird Park, Johnson Drive and Cody Street, Shawnee, KS

Found:  May 25, 2014

On the northeast corner of the intersection of Johnson Drive and Cody Street on the southwest corner of Herman Laird Park sits the Chief Charles Bluejacket Memorial Fountain.  It is kind of hidden from the streets due to the shrubbery and trees planted around the fountain.

The centerpiece of the fountain is the sculpture Taking Time which is a tribute to Chief Charles Bluejacket, who is an important figure in the history of Shawnee, Kansas.  The plaque that goes with the sculpture says a little bit about him.

Around the fountain are various plaques and bricks that look to have been purchased by various people and organizations to memorialize family and friends.

The fountain itself is fairly simple.  The water comes up in the pool behind the sculpture and cascades down into the lower pool.

Antioch Park Fountains

Antioch Park 003

Location:  Antioch Park, Merriam, KS

Found:  May 25, 2014

Antioch Park in Merriam has two small lakes in it.  In the south lake, directly accessible through the south entrance to the park, are these two fountains.  There is a walking path around the lake with bridges and benches.  This lake is a popular fishing spot, I even saw a guy reel in a fish while I was taking these pictures, and geese and turtles enjoy the lake as well.

The Helen Cuddy Memorial Rose Garden Fountain is in the north half of Antioch Park.

Civic Center Park Fountain

Santa Fe Fountain 008

Location:  East Santa Fe Street and Chestnut Street, Olathe, KS

Found:  May 3, 2014

In 2013, the city of Olathe began construction to turn downtown properties into park space.  This lot is across the street to the southeast of Olathe City Hall and R.R. Osborne Plaza.  This park was formally opened and dedicated on April 25, 2014.  It is across the street from the Civic Center Park Reflecting Pool.

At this time, I do not know if the fountain has a specific name.  After some research, this park and the one across the street are apparently referred to as Civic Center Park with perhaps directional modifers, North and South on them (this one would be the south park if that is so).

Riverside Play Fountain

Riverside 003Location:  NW Platte Road and US Highway 69, Riverside, MO

Found:  May 10, 2014

This fountain is at the intersection of NW Platte Road and US-69.  The wall in the back, obviously, let’s you know that you have reached Riverside, Missouri.  The play aspect of the fountain comes from the path leading directly to the fountain letting one run through and play in the fountain if one so desired.  It is a relatively small area though.  Riverside’s Platte Road Trail runs past here and there is a bench to stop and rest and watch the fountain while out on your walk or bike ride on the trail.

The Briarcliff Waterfall is about a half-mile to the east.

Briarcliff Waterfall

Briarcliff Waterfall New 009

Location:  Briarcliff Waterfall Park, NW Platte Road and NW Valley Lane, Riverside, MO

Found:  May 10, 2014

Park of the Riverside, MO Trails and Park system, Briarcliff Waterfall Park contains the Briarcliff Waterfall.  It is blended into the existing rock face.  Water comes down the falls and runs a short distance under the pedestrian bridge and then down into the pond.  Riverside’s Platte Road hiking trail runs through the park.  A few geese and their young were enjoying the park while I was there.  Judging by the surroundings, geese frequent this park often so watch your step if you visit.

There is a subdivision at the top of the hill.  You can see some new construction at the top of the waterfall in some of the pictures.

The Riverside Play Fountain is about a half-mile to the west.

June 6, 2016 – UPDATE – As this post is one of the most popular, if not the most popular, post on my blog, I was in the neighborhood and decided to get a new set of photos.  I have added them to the post and kept the old photos up just for comparison’s sake.

Children’s Park Fountain

Children's Park 001

Location:  Zona Rosa, Kansas City, MO

Found:  May 10, 2014

This fountain sits in the middle of a small park called Children’s Park in the Zona Rosa shopping area behind the Hereford House.  Apparently, you can throw coins into the fountain.  When I was there, a little girl was creeping toward the fountain with a dollar bill in her hand but she got stopped before she could get close enough to put it in.

Found:  May 10, 2014

In front of the casino part of the Argosy complex of Mediterranean-themed buildings is this fountain.  At first I thought maybe it was an old-style lamp, but I’m not really sure.  Water shoots out the top, then cascases down the curves and into the basin below.  The Argosy Hotel Fountain is to the east.

Civic Center Park Reflecting Pool

Santa Fe Pool 001

Location:  East Santa Fe Street and Chestnut Street, Olathe, KS

Found:  May 3, 2014

In 2013, the city of Olathe began construction to turn downtown properties into park space.  This lot is across the street to the east of Olathe City Hall and R.R. Osborne Plaza.  There is a small fountain set in amongst limestone blocks and water gently flows from the top pool down to the lower pool.  Along the sidewalks on the north side of the pool are plaques commemorating each of the six Olathe residents who went on to become the Governor of Kansas.  This park was formally opened and dedicated on April 25, 2014.  It is across the street from the Civic Center Park Fountain.

At this time, I do not know if the fountain has a specific name.  After some research, this park and the one across the street are apparently referred to as Civic Center Park with perhaps directional modifers, North and South on them (this one would be the north park if that is so).
